Takahama Town

Nakayamadera Temple

Built in the year 736 by the monk Taicho, at the order of Emperor Shomu. Its location partway up Mt. Aoba provides an excellent view of the beautiful Wada coastline. The hon-do main hall is a simple building with a hinoki cypress bark roof. It houses a wooden statue of the seated Bato Kannon Bosatsu, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, which is only exhibited to the public once every 33 years.
