Mihama Town

Wakasa Kuniyoshi Castle History Museum

Kuniyoshi Castle was built about 450 years ago, in a mountainous area of eastern Wakasa Province. During the Warring States era (mid 1400s to early 1600s), it helped ward off a number of invasion attempts by the Echizen Asakura Clan. Sagaki, the castle town that grew around Kuniyoshi Castle, flourished as a post town on the Tango Highway. Even today, its townscape retains a great deal of its old-fashioned atmosphere. The Castle History Museum features the moved and reconstructed former main residence of the village official, historical documents and items excavated in archaeological investigations, and a variety of models, photos, and informational panels that tell the story of 450 years of local history.
