Wakasa Town

Kumagawa-juku Historic Post Town

This vital post connecting Wakasa to Kyoto began to grow in earnest starting in 1589. Vestiges of the old magistrate's office, guard houses, and city storehouse still remain, and even today, water continues to run through the town's old irrigation canal. The area has also been nationally designated as an Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings, and the old townscape, evocative of the town's glory days, remains preserved.
